#1 – LOCK your doors and windows! It sound simple and it is, but approximately one-third of home burglaries the burglar comes through an unlocked portal. Solid core exterior doors with high quality deadbolts and eyebolts in the frames of sliding windows to allow for ventilation without leaving enough space for a burglar are a good place to start.

#2 – A Home Security System – Find a local alarm company that offers a security system best fit for your needs. An security system should set of an alarm when someone enters your home uninvited. You can also have it set up to notify authorities or the company of an invasion. If you have valuables that need protection or are away for long stretches, you need a security system to protect your property from criminals.

#3 – Smart Landscaping – Don’t provide a place for burglars to hide. Trim your trees and shrubs, especially close to windows. Also, maintain your lawn. If it’s shaggy, burglars will know you are away from home.

#4 – HELLO NEIGHBOR – recruit your neighbors to check on your home while you are away. They can check your mail, newspapers, and doorway for deliveries. They can also do some labor intense activities like move your trash cans back after trash day and even park their car in your driveway occasionally while you’re out of town. Any sign that you are home can be enough to deter a burglar.

#5 – A Barking Dog – Also known as a burglar’s worst enemy. Burglars want to avoid being seen or caught. Barking dogs will bring unwanted attention, even if they are small, they can be an effective deterrent against burglars.

Burglars count on an empty house. These are just a few things you can do to keep them off your property and out of your home!

Sincerely,

Linn T. Hodge & Sons
